Which Comes First

“Why is a sense of belonging essential to forming an identity?”
“Why do people experience shifts and fluctuations in their sense of belonging?”
“Who am I and where do I belong?”

Which Comes First, showcased at Young Contemporaries ‘22 in Laband Art Gallery, represents a visual timeline of the artist's life. This mixed media tapestry, measuring 9ft x 12ft, illustrates how identity and belonging are distinct entities that shape our lives. The goal was to explore connections between identity and belonging through sensory connections and material contexts. Gathering personal belongings such as old photos, journal entires, plane tickets, train tickets, and more; I realized personal objects can offer a sense into our life storiesMy work developed into capturing the complexity of people.

Identity Categories

Identity Categories, showcased at Young Contemporaries ‘22 in Laband Art Gallery, won the Juror's First Prize. This piece features 16 ceramic faces cut off below the eyes, mounted in a grid. Crafted from various clays to represent the mixing of identities, some faces are filled with Chinese red pockets, while others contain Jamaican coffee beans to represent the artist’s sensory connections—smell reminds her of her hometown Kingston, Jamaica, and touch reminds her of family scattered around China. Some faces remain empty, exploring how belongings may  manifest through diverse identity categories.

It becomes clear that identity and belonging are integrative processes, shaped by relationships between self, society, and material contexts. They unfold simultaneously yet manifest uniquely for each individual, reflecting the complexity of human experience.

UX/UI Design | Mobile App | Unwind | March-May 2022

In collaboration with Alia Albor, we developed a self-care mobile app tailored for young adults, aiding them in navigating common life stressors. Our goal was to gain insights into young adults' stress management strategies and determine how a mobile app could enhance their self-care routines. Over three months, we identified young adults facing common life stresses as our target audience and crafted user personas, storyboards, and created a style tile for our app.

We mapped out the app's information architecture and user journey to ensure a seamless experience. Based on user insights, we incorporated features such as a 'goal of the day,' an optional view for certain questions, a journal/planner, a habit tracker, and an alarm/timer. Further design refinements included addingg scales, charts, and daily goal checkboxes.

From this project, we learned that organizing mental, physical, and emotional needs is crucial for young adults' self-care. With these insights, we aim to develop a high-fidelity prototype and conduct another round of testing with new participants to further refine our app.
